PhD Studentship: Biologically-inspired Multi-sensor and Multi-modal Video Analysis, UK

Northumbria University is offering PhD Studentship for the research project ‘Biologically-inspired Multi-sensor and Multi-modal Video Analysis’. This PhD research will investigate biologically-inspired video analysis techniques for multi-sensor and multi-modal systems.

The project aims to carry out behavioral analysis in the observed scenes from multi-modal multiple cameras and identify abnormal events automatically for security purpose.
Course Level: Fellowships are available for the Ph.D. program.
Study Subject: Biologically-inspired Multi-sensor and Multi-modal Video Analysis
Scholarship Award: The project is funded externally by Qatar Science Foundation through Qatar University. The funding is expected to start in either October 2016 or February 2017 and will cover both living expenses and tuition fees.
Security and monitoring systems are more and more demanding in terms of quality, reliability and flexibility especially those dedicated to video surveillance. This project aims to develop a versatile platform for a security monitoring system incorporating advanced techniques for multisensory signal pre- and post-processing, multi-modal data and information fusion, and intelligent sensor connectivity and secure wireless communications. The overall platform will be tested for video surveillance systems for public security. In such systems, reliability is a key feature that is affected by signal distortions due to the presence of artefacts resulting from technical limitations at different stages of the communication process. The project aims to use multidimensional and multiscale signal processing techniques in order to localize and mitigate the artefacts introduced by environment and system limitations and develop biologically-inspired approaches to fuse information collected from different sensors to exploit diversity and redundancy for improving the efficiency of detection, recognition and tracking tasks. The developed techniques will be tested on real scenarios corresponding to very low contrast and noisy data acquired by a multi-sensor platform.
Eligibility: The qualified PhD candidate is expected to have an initial study on relevant topics (video analysis, 3D modelling, machine learning, etc.). Fluent writing in English for academic/research purpose is preferred. Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (in a relevant subject) from a British higher education institution, or equivalent. Students who are not UK/EU residents are eligible to apply, provided they hold the relevant academic qualifications, together with an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
How to Apply: Informal enquiries regarding this studentship can be made to Prof Ahmed Bouridane (ahmed.bouridane@northumbria.ac.uk) or Dr Richard Jiang (richard.jiang-at-northumbria.ac.uk).
