Ideas Competition: Rewarding International Research Marketing Activities in Germany!

The DFG Ideas Competition, a part of the International Research Marketing project is a joint project of the DFG, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. The competition focuses on ideas that increase the visibility and attractiveness of German research abroad and attract highly qualified scientists for cooperation with Germany or for a research stay in Germany.
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the Research in Germany brand as part of the initiative ‘Promote Innovation and Research in Germany’.
The aim of the competition is to encourage German universities and non-university research institutions to develop international research marketing activities for implementation between December 2017 and February 2019.
Program Activities
The competition is designed to encourage research marketing activities which
- are aimed at international researchers (doctoral, postdoctoral or established researchers);
- raise the profile of German core research areas, research institutions, research groups or excellent individual researchers at international level and/or attract highly qualified researchers to participate in collaborative projects with German researchers or to visit Germany for research purposes;
- advance the interdepartmental cooperation within the university/non-university research institution in the development and/or implementation of the activities (e.g. communication/international affairs/research funding departments, International Office, research institutes/ groups/projects);
- pilot activities initially relating to individual faculties or group projects, which will be transferred at a later stage to other areas or the entire university/nonuniversity research institution, are also welcome.
Prizes
Three main prizes worth €100,000 each and an additional special prize of €75,000 will be awarded. The special ‘start-up’ prize will be awarded by the jury to recognize institutions that are currently in the process of setting up international research marketing activities.
Eligibility Criteria
The following institutions are eligible:
- universities,
- universities of applied science with strong research profiles,
- non-profit, non-university research institutions – particularly those involved in collaborative projects with co-applicant universities
