The ESRC is pleased to announce a call for longitudinal postdoctoral fellowships as part of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). These postdoctoral awards provide funding for up to one year full-time, or two years part-time at one of the Bloomsbury DTC’s research institutions.
CLOSER’s mission is to maximize the use, value and impact of the UK’s longitudinal studies, both at home and abroad.
These longitudinal postdoctoral placements are part of the wider fellowships scheme at the Bloomsbury DTC which is designed to provide a career development opportunity for those at a relatively early stage of their academic career who can demonstrate a great potential in social science research, with an international development focus.
Course Level: Fellowships are available for pursuing Postdoctoral program.
Study Subject: Proposals are welcome from any disciplinary field, but fellowship activities must be based at least 50% within the social sciences.
Scholarship Award: Approximately £3 million has been allocated for the pilot, and we expect to support 30 GCRF Postdoctoral Fellowships, of which up to five will be Longitudinal Studies Fellows in the pilot year of this scheme. Funding is available for up to £125,000 (100 percent full Economic Cost (fEC)) per fellowship. Fellowships will be supported at 80 per cent full Economic Cost (fEC).

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these fellowships:
- Applicants must have graduated with PhDs from the research organisation(s) (RO) which make up the DTCs participating in the pilot GCRF Fellowship Scheme (the South West, North West, Oxford, Bloomsbury or UCL, and Scottish DTCs) or those universities that host CLOSER studies: Bristol; Essex; and Southampton.
- At the time of submission, applicants must either have a Ph.D. or have passed their viva voce with only minor corrections. A postdoctoral fellowship cannot commence until the Ph.D. viva voce
- examination has been passed.
- Applicants must have no more than three years active postdoctoral experience at the start date of the award.
- The scheme is not open to applicants who are established, permanent members of staff in an academic position with a research component.
