The Beinecke Library offers a limited number of fellowships for non-Yale graduate students (doctoral candidates) wishing to conduct primary research for their dissertations or doctoral thesis. These
fellowships are extremely competitive. Only applicants demonstrating a need for in-depth consultation of Beinecke materials will receive serious consideration. Recipients are expected to be in residence during the period of their award and are encouraged to participate in the activities of Yale University.
Fellowship:
- The fellowship is granted for one, two, or three months, and must be taken up between June 1 and August 31, 2017.
- The fellowships pay for travel costs to and from New Haven and a living allowance of $3,000 per month.
Eligibility:
Graduate students seeking these fellowships must be currently enrolled in a PhD/doctoral program and must have completed their course work, passed their qualifying examinations, and be prepared to pursue research based upon an approved dissertation prospectus/proposal.
Application Process:
Applicants are required to submit the following materials to the Director of the Beinecke Library:
- An online application form;
- A curriculum vitae;
- A proposal (1200 word maximum) explaining in detail the specific relationship between the Beinecke Collections and the applicant’s research;
- A detailed list of specific research materials to be consulted at Beinecke during your fellowship;
- Two confidential letters of recommendation sent to the Beinecke Director, one of which must come from the principal director of the applicant’s dissertation;
- An approved dissertation prospectus/proposal;
Application materials may be submitted by postal mail or with the web application form. Please do not send hard copies of materials if you choose to attach your materials to the web application form. Application materials will not be accepted by email or fax; - Recommenders may submit their letters via the internet or postal mail. Electronic letters must come directly from the letter writer, not the applicant;
- If submitting your application materials by postal mail, sealed, signed, confidential letters can be included in your application packet or sent directly from the recommenders.
