About the Award: The St Andrews Prize for the Environment was set up by the University of St Andrews and ConocoPhillips in 1998 to recognise significant contributions to environmental conservation. Since its launch, it has attracted entries from all over the world each year on a range of diverse topics.
The Prize’s  purpose is to find and reward entrepreneurs who come forward with original and practical ideas for coping with specific environmental problems. Such ideas must be designed to lead to action, be realistic, realisable and easy to be replicated elsewhere taking account of their social and economic implications.
The diversity of topics supported continues to grow, but examples include:
  • Biodiversity
  • Sustainable development
  • Urban regeneration
  • Recycling
  • Health and environmental health
  • Waste, water and sanitation issues
  • Renewable energy
  • Wildlife conservation including reducing animal-human conflict
  • Land use and maintenance
Type: Contest
Eligibility: 
  • Applications to the St Andrews Prize must be written in clear grammatical English.
  • Successful applications must clearly highlight the project’s innovative features, and state how the project meets the criteria for the Prize.
  • All required sections of the form must be completed and incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • The St Andrews Prize is not awarded to fund programmes of study or stand-alone research projects. Evidence of the success of the project, both in terms of innovation and tangible outcomes, must be provided.
Number of Awardees: 3
Value of Contest: The winner receives $100,000 USD and the two finalists receive $25,000 USD.
How to Enter: Please submit your project in two stages
First Submission Round
  • The 2017 prize is now open for entries and will close for entries on Monday, 31st of October 2016.
  • Applications for this annual prize are invited from individuals, multi-disciplinary teams or community groups. Research projects will not be considered.
  • The online entry form should be completed in English and clearly written for a general (rather than technical) audience.
  • If your submission is unsuccessful you will be notified.
  • If your submission is to be considered further, you will be contacted and advised on how to enter the second submission round.

Second Submission Round
  • For the second submissions stage you will be required to provide a more detailed summary of your project.  More information on this submission round will be communicated to you in due course.
  • All second round entries will then be judged and finalists shortlisted.
  • If unsuccessful you will also be notified.
Finalists
  • Finalists are required to present their submissions in English and participate in debate at a seminar in St Andrews.
  • Finalists are required to provide images and footage of the project for publicity purposes.
  • Following the seminar, the winner will be required to participate in a short promotional roadshow for the Prize.
  • Where a team rather than an individual is chosen to be a finalist, one representative will be invited to take part in the seminar.
  • It will be a condition of entry that submissions for the St Andrews Prize are freely available to the organisers for publication in newspapers and journals internationally and for any other publicity activity required by the organisers.
