Journalism for Future Challenges is a programme for early career journalists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine who are looking to expand their investigative reporting skills, with a focus on organized crime and corruption, as well as to expand their professional network.
This intensive training programme is taught by reporters, editors and other experts with long and broad international experience. They all use the most sophisticated tools and methods for improved investigative journalism.
The sessions will cover topics such as basic investigative reporting, planning and managing an investigative project, an overview of how organized crime and corruption works, personal security, advanced research on the internet, encrypting, source protection, ethics, news verification and visual journalism.
In a recent survey, majority of participants reported changing the way they work/report thanks to what they’ve learned at the Programme. And many have received promotions or pay raises! Be one of them!
The programme will take place in Riga, Latvia, in three separate modules:
- June 26 – June 30, 2017
- August 21 – 25, 2017
- November 27 – December 1, 2017
Participants must attend all three modules.

All participants will be generously funded through a grant from the Swedish Institute as part of the Swedish support for the EU Eastern Partnership. The Eastern Partnership builds on a donation, which established the Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga, given by the Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation for Media Research in Karlstad, Sweden. In previous years, some supplementary grants have helped cover additional costs.
Eligibilities
In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:
- Early career journalists with a strong interest in investigative journalism. Prior work in investigative journalism is not necessary, but some general journalism experience is required.
- Residents or citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine between 20 and 35 years of age.
- Applicants should be fluent in English.
Eligible Regions: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, or Ukraine.
APPLICATION PROCESS
All participants will receive a diploma, and will participate in building a lasting network of international and regional journalists, editors, and researchers — one that connects to and builds upon the network already working in the Baltic States. Participants may be invited to future summer schools with the possibility of getting part of the costs covered by a scholarship.
