Food Sustainability Media Award: Inviting Professional Journalists and Emerging Talent Worldwide!

The Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN) in collaboration with the Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking applicants for its Food Sustainability Media Award with an aim to recognise the work of professional journalists and emerging talent from all over the world for excellence in reporting and communicating issues related to food security, sustainability, agriculture and nutrition.
Objectives
  • To raise awareness of today’s ‘food paradoxes’.
  • To promote sustainable and achievable solutions to today’s greatest food paradoxes. The launch of the Award aims to make the topic of food sustainability more approachable and understandable to the general public and to spark a global discussion around food sustainability and the current global challenges related to food security.
  • To foster strong media engagement through journalism training.
Topic Areas
  • Hunger & Obesity: for every undernourished person there are now two obese or overweight people in the world;
  • Food & Fuel: a third of agricultural cereal crops are used to produce animal feed or biofuels despite hunger and malnutrition;
  • Waste & Starvation: 1.3 billion tons of edible food is wasted every day, four times the amount needed to feed the 795 million undernourished people around the world.

Prize Information
Winners awarded for their published written, photography and video work will receive a €10,000 cash prize.
Eligibility Criteria
  • The Award is open only to those who are at least 18 years of age at the time of entry. Proof of age may be required.
  • The Award is open to journalists, freelancers and amateur reporters. Work produced by amateur reporters, freelancers or staffers from a news/media outlet is eligible. All entries should focus on stories and issues around the theme of food sustainability.
  • Entries submitted by members of staff working at the same organisation as any of the competition judges or at BCFN Foundation, Barilla Group, Thomson Reuters Foundation or Thomson Reuters are not eligible. Entries submitted by freelancers who work with these organisations are eligible.
  • The Award recognizes the outstanding work of journalists and emerging talents across six categories: written journalism (published and unpublished), photography (published and unpublished), and video (published and unpublished). Published and unpublished work will be judged separately.
