German Historical Institute Washington: Inviting Proposals for Conferences and Workshops 2018-2019, Deadline: 15 June 2017
The German Historical Institute Washington (GHI) is seeking proposals for conferences and workshops for the 2018/2019 academic year. GHI is seeking proposals in its core areas of research that are:
- German history
- American history
- transnational and global history
- digital history
- the history of knowledge
GHI also encourages proposals involving new topics of exploration and new approaches to historical research, e.g. in “Migration and Knowledge.
This call for conference proposals is aimed at expanding the GHI’s collaboration with scholars and institutions in North America and Europe.

The program offers doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for archival research, runs transatlantic seminars for graduate students, and organizes upwards of twenty international conferences, symposia, and workshops every year.
Eligibility Criteria
- To be eligible to submit a conference or workshop proposal to the GHI, scholars must hold a PhD in history or related fields.
- Individual applicants must be affiliated with a university or research institution in the United States, Canada, or Germany; for group applications, at least one applicant must be affiliated with a U.S., Canadian, or German institution.
- Proposals may be submitted in either English or German; the conference language must be English.
How to Apply
The proposal must include:
- The completed application form, including a projected budget.
- A description of the proposed conference topic (1500 words maximum) that:
- sets the topic in historiographic context;
- explains how the conference is expected to contribute to research on the topic and how it will open new perspectives on the topic;
- lists the names and affiliations of potential participants (this will not take the place of a call for papers).
- All application documents must be submitted via email.
