Model United Nations conference in Italy, Deadline: 25th March, 2017
Program Date: 3rd-7th April, 2017
Venue: Bocconi University, Milan
The twelfth edition of MILMUN, the first and longest lasting Model United Nations conference in Italy, will be held from April 3rd to 7th, 2017 in Milan. The conference is organized by the MILMUN Association and is hosted by Bocconi University. From 2006 to 2016 the MILMUN conferences have brought more than 1500 top students from over 100 universities with more than 80 different nationalities with all five continents being represented to Milan, Italy. Their main fields of study were just as diverse, ranging from Economics, International Relations and Law to History, Medicine and Mathematics.
The main purpose of the conference is to give university students the chance to practice diplomacy by impersonating the role of a diplomat or chairing one of the committees. This will help them train a set of skills, including the ability to speak confidently in public, negotiation skills to form alliances and furthering their country’s position and the drafting of diplomatic documents. The main outcome of the simulation will be contained in the resolutions that each committee will pass on the topics discussed throughout the week. This document is the outcome of strenuous research on the issues under discussion and of challenging negotiations in the conference sessions. Resolutions will also be sent to the respective international organizations’ organs to challenge them on taking innovative solutions towards some of the most urgent issues on the international agenda.
2017 Conference theme
In the last years, we have seen a very dynamic world characterized by a variety of relevant events: Brexit, the coup failed in Turkey, terroristic attacks throughout the world, migrant crisis, conflicts (such as civil wars in Syria, Ukraine and Yemen or the spread of ISIL in the Middle East) and many diplomatic tensions. These are only few examples for describing a very fast changing world. Solutions came up, but also new problems have developed. The United Nations and other international and regional organizations seem to struggle with finding ways to properly face the new challenges of the world. MILMUN 2017 will focus on these problems starting from the experience of the League of Nations, the first international organization to be founded, to the ongoing issues faced by nowadays international organizations such as UN, EU or Interpol.
Digitalization gave great opportunities to the world including the innovative and quick way to spread and share news and info, but still not everyone can afford it and it also gave criminals a new area to be active. All this can be solved within the framework of a new international dialogue between countries, peoples and international organizations.
Therefore, we decided to choose the following theme for our conference in 2017:
Challenges for a dynamic world: rethinking political dialogue across borders.
The following committees will be simulated:
- United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
- United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)
- United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
- League of Nations (LN)
- European Council
- International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL)
- International Center for Journalists (ICFJ)
MILMUN 2017 has not only the goal to discuss international problems and try to come up with a possible solution for these problems, the conference should also give young students the opportunity to think critical about the United Nations and how political dialogue needs to be changed.
