Description
PolarTREC (Teachers and Researchers Exploring and Collaborating) is a program in which K-12 teachers spend 3-6 weeks participating in hands-on field research experiences in the polar regions. The goal of PolarTREC is to invigorate polar science education and understanding by bringing K-12 educators and polar researchers together. The long-term PolarTREC vision is to create and sustain a successful approach to professional development in the polar regions, fostering enthusiasm and awareness to inspire the next generation of scientists and a STEM-literate public. The program goal is to invigorate polar science education and understanding by bringing educators and polar researchers together in professional collaboration. By integrating research and education, PolarTREC will help sustain and grow the scientific, public, and political enthusiasm for polar research and education. The aim is to achieve this goal through the following objectives:

Objective 1: To improve teachers’ STEM content knowledge of the Polar Regions and transfer to the classroom;

Objective 2: To increase teachers’ knowledge and use of STEM practices with their students in the classroom;

Objective 3: To increase students’ understanding and engagement in the Polar Regions and interest;

Objective 4: To develop long-term professional relationships between the education and research communities.

Eligibility
Educators, which strives to build ongoing, collaborative relationships between educators and polar researchers;Teachers and researchers based on similar scientific interests and outreach goals, facilitate the growth of this relationship, and provide support for the relationship to become independently sustainable.

Costs
PolarTREC or the NSF logistics providers cover most costs associated with participation in the program, this includes travel, lodging, food, essential field gear, and substitute costs if you are on an expedition while your school is in session;Expenses teachers may incur are likely to include personal apparel and gear not provided (long underwear, gloves, socks, etc.), some medical expenses or evacuation insurance if not included in your present insurance, personal travel or travel related to outreach activities before or after the expedition, and possible salary related losses depending on your school and their policies for leave.
