RESEARCH INTERNSHIP AND
EVENTS AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS INTERNSHIP
NLGN is an independent think tank and collaborative network of local authorities and private sector thinkers. We connect members of the network to each other through our events programme and research work.
We are offering two, 12-week internships of 21 hrs/week with a stipend of £1700, or £1,820 if age 25 or over (equivalent to the national minimum wage/national living wage). There is some flexibility with regards to working hours, but ideally interns would work 3 consecutive days a week, from 10am – 5pm.

RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
NLGN’s research sets the terms of debate for the big conversations across local government and the public sector. This internship is designed for candidates to gain experience of the think tank environment and contribute to applied research and policy-making. Through our extensive events programme, interns will also have the opportunity to network with policy makers.
Ideally, we are looking for graduates with a background in, or demonstrable aptitude for, policy research and an interest in contributing to innovative policy solutions.
Skills and experience required:
- A strong academic background and preferably a master’s degree
- Knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment
- Good attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Keen to help develop innovative public policy ideas and promote local democratic engagement
- Interest in local government
EVENTS AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS INTERNSHIP
This internship will give candidates valuable and practical insight into events management, communications, marketing and exposure to public policy and stakeholder engagement. This post will suit a highly-organised individual interested in events and external affairs.
This position will report directly to the Networks and Events Manager and will work closely with the whole external affairs team.
Skills and experience required:
- Strong communications skills
- Good attention to detail
- Excellent IT skills – including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook
- Demonstrable ability to work independently and as part of a small team
- Able to learn and apply new skills quickly
- Excellent interpersonal skills
Skills and experience desirable:
- Experience of events management
- An interest in local government
