Foreign Government Awards for Canadian Researchers in Mexico, 2017-2018
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico, through the Agencia Mexicana de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo offers scholarships to Canadians who wish to participate in an exchange for one academic term at the undergraduate or graduate level; two-year scholarships for Master’s degrees, and three or four-year scholarships for Doctorates, including medical specialization and sub-specialization.
The main objective of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico is to provide high quality, comprehensive educational and training opportunities that are compatible to changing needs of the students.
Applicants who do not meet Spanish language requirements may be eligible for language training for up to six months (or half the period of the scholarship) before the start of their study or research at an institution assigned by SRE. Language training is subject to a letter of acceptance by a participating post-secondary institution.
Course Level: Scholarships are available to Canadians for study or research at the Undergraduate, Master’s, Doctoral or Postdoctoral level, including for medical specializations and sub-specializations, in Mexico.
Scholarship Award: The award includes:
- a round-trip, economy class airfare ticket for the scholarship recipient only, by the most direct and economical route between Canada and Mexico;
- transportation from Mexico City to the host institution and back, at the start and end of the scholarship, if studying outside Mexico City (the mode of transportation will depend on the distance);
- tuition and registration fees for the academic program as established by each institution;
- tuition fees and accommodation for a language course (where eligible) for up to six months or for half the length of the award;
- a monthly living allowance of:
- $ 8,412.00 MXN pesos for studies and research at the Master’s level; or
- $ 10,956.00 MXN pesos for doctoral studies and research, medical specializations and subspecialization research at the Ph.D. and postdoctoral level, and postdoctoral fellowships; or
- $ 8,412.00 MXN pesos for Spanish language or Mexican culture courses.health insurance from the Mexican Social Security Institute starting after three months. The scholarship recipient must have health insurance that covers both major and minor medical expenses and provides international coverage for their first three months in Mexico.

- one to twelve months to conduct studies or research at the master’s, Ph.D. or postdoctoral level;
- up to one year for a specialization;
- up to two years for a Master’s degree;
- up to four years for a doctorate, based on the length of the program;
- up to three years for a medical specialization and sub-specialization; and
- Spanish language training before the beginning of the studies or the research, for up to half the period of the scholarship, or a maximum of 6 months.
- be Canadian citizens, permanently residing in Canada by the competition deadline; Canadian citizens with Mexican nationality are not eligible; and
- have completed the prerequisite degrees for the proposed program of study at the time of submitting an application, and obtained a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 8/10.
- scholarships granted are subject to final acceptance by a participating post-secondary institution (Spanish only);
- no changes (tenure, host institution, etc.) are permitted once the scholarship has been awarded and accepted by the candidate. The scholarship is non-transferable;
- scholarship recipients must obtain a visa for their studies or research (study permit – temporary resident visa) from the Mexican consular office that serves their place of residency in Canada before traveling to Mexico;
- candidates applying for postdoctoral research must submit proof of a Ph.D. degree; and
- scholarships are not offered for studies in business administration, plastic surgery, accounting, marketing, dentistry and advertising and related areas.
- Certificate of admission: certificate of admission from the host institution or copy of correspondence testifying that the applicants have requested admission or will have access to the facilities needed to complete the proposed research project. Applicants can submit a contact letter from the host institution and continue later with the procedures and requirements of the host institution.
- Proof of Canadian citizenship: copy of a birth certificate and passport (both copies must be included in the same file); a baptism certificate is not accepted as proof of Canadian citizenship.
- Official transcripts: a transcript of all post-secondary studies to date (complete academic records including colleges and CÉGEPs) with the cumulative grade point average for each degree or certificate. A GPA of 8/10 for the most recent degree is required. If on a different scale, submit its equivalent on a 0 to 10 scale.
- Study or Research proposal: An essay describing the applicants’ study or research plan (maximum two pages).
- A copy of the diploma for the highest degree obtained.
- The government of Mexico application form (PDF, 643 ko) (Spanish only): the official Scholarships for International Students application form of the Government of Mexico duly completed, signed and including a digital photograph.
- Curriculum vitae: the curriculum vitae must not include photographs or any personal information such as a date of birth (maximum three pages). The curriculum vitae must include teaching and research activities, recent publications, honors, awards and scholarships received as well as languages proficiency.
- Letter of support or acceptance letter: a signed letter from the academic contact at the Mexican institution with his contact information (name of the institution, position, email, phone number) and stating the length of the studies with the start and end dates, and the type of studies. For research, the acceptance letter should state the name of the advisor and the type of support and mentor that will be provided.
- For mobility scholarships: a letter from the applicant’s institution agreeing to give academic credit for the classes or course of study that will be taken in Mexico.
- For research grants: a copy of the academic document showing the applicant has finished or is currently enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral program.
- Candidates already in Mexico must have a current immigration document, with a Temporary Resident Student Visa (card).
- If Spanish is not the applicant’s native language, include a certificate of an advanced level of proficiency in Spanish from a university or language center. For research grants in a language different from Spanish, it is mandatory to submit an official communication from the hos institution, stating the commitment to provide tutoring in a different language, specifying the language and the name of the tutor.
- Original medical certificate of good health issued by a public or private institution no more than three months prior to submitting the documents. Independent health certificates will not be accepted.
- Letter of acceptance of the General Terms and Conditions of the program (PDF,360 ko) (Spanish only): with the candidate’s handwritten signature.
- Four recent original photographs (not digital), full face on a white background, 3cm x 3cm, with name and nationality noted on the back.
