The Charles Steward Mott Foundation is currently seeking applications for its various grant programs that seeks to fulfill its mission of supporting efforts that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society.

Funding Information

• The foundation’s median grant size is in the $100,000 range.
• The majority of its grants are between $15,000 and $250,000 annually.

Funding Areas

• Civil Society Program: aims to strengthen philanthropy and the nonprofit sector as vital vehicles for increasing civic engagement and improving communities and societies.
• Education Program: aims to create an environment in which children and young people from low- and moderate-income families have access to a full educational experience that connects with family and community and leads to academic and economic success
• Environment Program: aims to support the efforts of an engaged citizenry working to create accountable and responsive institutions, sound public policies and appropriate models of development that protect communities and the diversity and integrity of ecosystems in North America and around the world.
• Flint Area Program: aims to foster a well-functioning, connected community that is capable of meeting the economic, social and racial challenges ahead.

 Eligibility Criteria

• For U.S. organizations, proof of tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status by the IRS is required. Other financial and organizational information is required for non-U.S. organizations.
• The Mott Foundation makes grants in the U.S. and, on a limited geographic basis, internationally. Grants outside the U.S. are made only in the Civil Society and Environment programs.
• All prospective applicants should review the mission, program areas, geographic range and available funding for the Foundation’s programs before making initial contact.
• Letters of Inquiry should include a brief description of the project, the funding needed and the time period.
• Both general-purpose and project-specific requests are considered. In addition, both single- and multi-year proposals are acceptable.

How to Apply

• Letter of Inquiry: Interested applicants must submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) that describe the purpose and objectives of the project, general methodology and total cost of the project. A letter of inquiry enables the Foundation program staff to determine the relevance of the proposed project to the Foundation’s programs and to provide advice on whether to submit a full proposal.
• Full Proposals: If the Letter of Inquiry receives a favorable response, that it is followed by full proposal.
